A new play by Emma Callahan
“FREE! TONIGHT!!” explores who is seen, who gets to create themself, and the looming presence of those left behind in the American coming of age story. It follows three New York City teenagers’ hellish subway ride on Halloween night. Tonight, Priscila is going to her first (don’t tell anyone that) party. Her and best friend Siobhan can finally become that most elusive thing– “cool.” That is, if little sister Laney doesn’t ruin everything. From treacherous brushes with fantastical characters, to teasing out the contradictions of mestiza identity, the play takes questions about the safety, privilege, and belonging of Asian New Yorkers during the preternatural world of 2020 New York City and drops them through the looking glass.
